Week 3 - Thing 7

I decided to blog this week about a technology that I have been integrating at school... the Promethean board. For those of you in schools, the Promethean board is like a SMART board, just a different brand. Our school district just purchased a number of these boards and they have been installed in several classrooms and in the library. This board is used like a black board. The user uses a "pen" that is used to write on the board. The difference with the Promethean board is that it only has one pen and the user chooses the tools from a toolbox on the computer.

This board is really useful in the library. I have created a few PowerPoint presentations to introduce my students to the library. I created a presentation about library rules and procedures and also how to care for books. The board also comes with an accompanying site that has already created presentations to be used on the board. This saves time when it comes to showing presentations.

I'm interested to hear if anyone else has used this technology and what creative uses they have thought of.

  1. Hi Brandi:

I actually blogged about the same thing. Our school district has undergone a real push for technology and they are trying to eventually get a promethean board into every classroom in the district. I am fortunately at one of the schools where each classroom does have one. I have been using it everyday, showing videos, virtual labs, and powerpoints. I am going to showcase it to parents on back-to-school night with a powerpoint presentation explaining class policies and procedures. It has made teaching much more exciting for me and my students!

  2. Brandi,
Our school district is not as advanced with technology as your is. I teach second grade, and last year a TV was installed in every classroom. I have created a lot of powerpoints to teach things that I used to use the overhead projector for. I add color, clip art, photos and sounds to make it interesting. The thing that I don't like is that the TV screen is smaller than the area the projector can show, so the kids can't read things as easily as they can the old way.

  3. Brandi,
I received a Polyvision board in my room 3 years ago. I am constantly looking for ways to use it with my classes. I teach Senior English, so I have found it beneficial for annotating literature etc.

The one thought I try to stand by is have the students work at the board as opposed to me. The interaction created by having the students writing on and working with the board is much more powerful than if I'm the one with the pen in hand!

I would also love to hear how others implement the board into the curriculum. I don't want it to be a glorified white board so any suggestions are welcome!
